Who is Slinkeee then?
Well it’s me, Lindsay Elissa Coils, a freelance illustrator, crafter, tea drinker, animal and nature lover, ninja and all round adventurous type and I live on the coast in the beautiful county of Northumberland.
For as long as I can remember I’ve been passionate about art. The fact that I get to do it for a living makes me a very happy bunny.
Having studied both graphic design and design advertising, I then chose to specialise in illustration. I was lucky enough to be taken on by an illustration studio working in the licensed character industry for the likes of Disney, Warner Bros, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon before venturing into the world of freelance.
Becoming self employed has given me the opportunity to develop a whole new skill set. As I deal with all aspects of my business, I’ve learned about social media management, setting up sets for product shoots and dealing with everything that comes with running an online shop. I continue to learn the digital skills needed to run my business through training and workshops and love learning new things I can utilise. It’s also allowed me to work with some lovely clients and build relationships with them over the years with many of them becoming friends.
I joined a local craft club in 2012 to use the skills I wasn’t using in my studio work and also to spend time with other creative people as being freelance can sometimes be a lonely existence. I’ve made some great friends there and continue to be inspired by and learn from them. I decided I’d like to build this new venture into my business and Slinkeee Handmade was born. I opened an Etsy shop and now also sell through Facebook and have now added a shop to my site. I’m looking to spend more time on developing new products as well as advertising my shop via the social channels to attract a wider audience.
Slinkeee Illustration now exists under the umbrella of Slinkeee Creative to include the design work I’m being commissioned to create, solving problems for other small businesses. While there are many designers out there, I feel I can offer the added bonus of being able to draw and many of my design projects have required both skills.
In 2012, I was lucky enough to receive two business awards. Aside from running several businesses, former Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis runs the Small Business Sunday award, #SBS. Theo gives the accolade to six small businesses that he sees potential in every Sunday and retweets those winning businesses to over 500,000 of his Twitter followers. Exactly a month later, Jacqueline Gold, chief executive of Ann Summers, chose my business as one of three businesses that she chooses every Wednesday who she deems to have a unique offering, have strong brand values and the potential to grow and succeed in their industry. This award celebrates women in business and is known as Women On Wednesday or #WOW. Winning both awards has given my business a much needed boost in an industry where competition is fierce and has offered support and networking opportunities with other winners throughout the UK. I also have the opportunity to attend a yearly event to network in person with other winners.
If you see potential in Slinkeee like Theo and Jacqueline have, I’m always up for a chat about new projects, challenges or collaborations on +44 (0) 771 509 3786 or you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
