A Right Royal Cumbrian Jubilee!

My boyfriend’s birthday fell on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend so it was always going to involve copious amounts of food and alcohol, so we decided to team that up with a break away to the beautiful Lake District in Cumbria.

We stayed at a lovely little hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere called The Oakbank House Hotel with views of Lake Windermere. It’s ideally situated for the little town of Bowness which is less than a 2 minute walk away and is run by a very friendly man named Danny. The breakfast room also overlooks the Lake so you are able to check out the weather before heading out.

Sadly, we weren’t blessed with the best weather while we were there but still managed to get out and about to Grasmere, Ambleside and Skelwith Bridge as well as enjoying the Jubilee celebrations in Bowness. The bank holiday Monday was a beautiful day so we headed out and decided to tackle one of the fells. It was a little spur of the moment so we weren’t really prepared and had never climbed the fells before. Last time we were in the Lakes we decided that next time we came, we were going to climb Red Screes as it looked fairly easy for first timers. The climb was fairly easy and the view from the summit was so worth it especially on such a clear day. If you ever get the chance to climb it, make sure you have a camera. At the bottom of the fell is the well known Kirkstone Pass where you can call in for a much needed diet coke or something stronger if you don’t have the car.

Over the weekend, I also got to indulge in my owl obsession, getting to cuddle up to a 12 week old owl which promptly fell asleep on me as well as holding and stroking several others and tickling under the wings of another with huge orange eyes. The owner saw the look in my eyes and said “That’s how I started”. Maybe that’s what I should be doing with my life instead of drawing. Mmmmm………..
